New Section of IP Licensing & Drafting

A new section of IP Licensing & Drafting that focuses on technology has been added for the Spring 2007 semester.  The course will meet on five Fridays (1/26, 2/2, 2/23, 3/16 and 3/23) from 9-2.  We are fortunate to have been able to hire Terry Illardi who is Copyright Counsel for IBM.   Mr. Illardi is also chairman of the Intellectual Property Owners Assocation Open Source Committee since its inception in 2001 and is an advisor to the American Law Institute's Principles of the Law of Software Contracts project.

Philadelphia Consensus Statement

Students at New York Law School and the New York Law School Institute for Information Policy and Law have partnered with Universities Allied for Essential Medicines, an international student group that promotes research and development of medicines for neglected diseases and alternative licensing strategies in order to provide access to medicines in poor countries. At a recent national conference, Universities Allied for Essential Medicines developed the Philadelphia Consensus Statement that has been signed by world leaders in medicine, law, and public policy. The Statement urges universities who produce intellectual property necessary to health-related product development to adopt several access-minded recommendations with respect to their patenting and licensing practices.

Students are in a unique position to negotiate with universities and compel them to make changes to their technology transfer policies in order to make the medicines and treatments they develop more readily accessible to those they were designed to benefit. In the spirit of UAEM, students at New York Law School have undertaken projects to help provide insight into how patents play a role in access to medicines.

Writing Compeition

The UCLA Journal of Law and Technology (JOLT) would like to invite your students to participate in our writing contest.

DETAILS: The WHOIS database contains information on the owners of Internet domains. The domain owner's contact details, such as address and phone number, are made easily accessible to anyone --including stalkers and identity thieves.

The quesion of how much personal information should be publicly available in the WHOIS database pits privacy issues against the needs of law enforcement and against intellectual property concens.

The future of Internet privacy rights may well depend upon the consensus reached by these panelists and their decision making peers. We welome you to a lively discussion with opportunity for public comment.
